Assessment of the seizures in Fazao-Malfakassa National Park (March-December 2014)
In 2014, activities in Fazao-Malfakassa National Park have been focused in particular on anti-poaching actions, as well as measures against illegal gold mining, logging and people migrations.
Under the direction of the Park Manager, Sourakatou Ouro-Bangna, regular and unexpected patrols have been set up on the reserve’s territory. From Bounako in the North to Hézoudé in the South, from Boulohou in the West to Kalaré in the East, including Fazao, the entire Park is now under regular surveillance. Said surveillance was recently reinforced by the recruitment of 32 eco-rangers in October 2014.
Thanks to these actions, several poachers and gold miners have been apprehended. 10 chainsaws, 27 hunting weapons and 3 motor-pumps have been seized, and transferred to the Regional Direction of the Environment and Forest Resources Ministry.
