Circus Animals

Fondation Franz Weber (FFW) fights for banning animals in circuses worldwide.

FFW launched the campaign "Catalunya Lliure d’Animals en Circs" (CLAC), together with the animal protection association LIBERA!. The purpose of this campaign is to update the Catalan Law on the protection of animals to include a ban on the use of animals in circuses. On 7 May 2014, the Catalan Parliament voted in favour of a proposal to amend the law in this sense.

Success: On 22 July 2015, the Catalonian Parliament approved a law to ban using animals in circuses with an overwhelming majority of over 80 per cent (105 votes in favour, 19 votes against, 8 abstentions). The law will come into force within two years, which should give circuses the necessary time to adapt to the new legal situation. This includes finding the best solution for relocating the animals concerned.

The law primarily applies to all wild animals. Domesticated species such as pets and livestock will be excluded for the time being. However, this rests on the recommendation of a scientific commission, which will investigate animal welfare in all circuses active in Catalonia during the transition period.
