EQUIDAD Sanctuary - Argentina

In Argentina, over 70,000 horses and ponies are exploited for collecting rubbish. They are thought of as machines, as robots, pushed until they draw their last breath, and treated like trash as soon as they are no longer able to work. These tortured beings and their owners, the «cartoneros» are despised by society. Nevertheless, they play an important social role.

During a press conference on 31 May 2011, Fondation Franz Weber (FFW), together with the Argentinian animal protection association LIBERA!, launched a campaign to abolish the use of horses in the collection of rubbish in Argentina, and all of Latin America. This campaign, entitled «Basta de TaS», aims to replace the refuse collection horses with motorised vehicles and put an end to the mistreatment of horses. The freed animals are adopted by individuals or taken to the EQUIDAD Sanctuary created by FFW in San Marcos Sierra, in the centre of Argentina, where they can finally live peaceful, dignified and healthy lives.

Today, besides sheltering numerous horses, the sanctuary also houses donkeys, goats, sheep, cows, chickens, dogs and cats, all saved from inhumane treatment or severe neglect.
